Why does the catholic church seem to take some scripture literally and not others?

for instance they believe that Matt 16:18-19 (And I also say to you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hades shall not prevail against it etc.) establishes Peter as the first pope, and that 2 Tim 2:2 ( and the things that you have heard from me among many witnesses, commit these to faithful men who will be able to teach others also) establishes apostolic succession. Yet they don't seem to continue this into anything that may go against them such as 1 Tim 4:1-3 ( Now the spirit expressly says that in latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to deceiving spirits and doctrines of demons, speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their own conscience seared with a hot iron, forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from foods which God created to be recieved with Thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.) as an ex-catholic this sounds like an acurate description of them to me
