Did Caroline Ingalls amputate her own leg?

In Little House on the Prairie "A Matter of Faith" Caroline gets a bad infection in her leg. A scene shows her tying rags around her leg and sterilizing a knife. In the next scene she is unconscious but she later recovers. Dr. Baker says that if she hadn't opened the infection in time she would have died. Did she cut off her own leg?
