Residents of Carmel area in Southern California, will someone please settle a small bet ?

Some years ago while driving on the coastal route from San Francisco to Los Angeles, on continuing our journey after stopping off at Carmel, I saw a signpost on the south bound verge which read 'Bends for the next 73 miles'. My friends here in the UK cannot believe that figure. Will someone please confirm it. Thanks
