What is the difference between negligence and gross negligence?

I am competing in a high school mock trial competition and the case involves a count of negligence and another count of gross negligence. If someone would please tell me the legal difference between the two and what has to be presented in the case in order to prove gross negligence I would really appreciate it. Please be very specific and explanatory if you have the time.
