The poet remembers his childhood street in 1926 before the after effects of WW2. Fifteen years later it is obvious the poet has returned from war and two of his neighbours are marred or dead because of their engagement in the Omaha beach offensive. He met and lost them at war under the orange moon of war and shellings. He remembers a time when he was "alive" and enjoying life and had just returned from seeing a film. He chooses to live in the past and not the present. I get the impression he too is marred by his experience and is engaged in avoidance.
